About us
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a charity that provides, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.
Our lifeboat crews and lifeguards need a dedicated, professional and talented team behind them.
This is an exciting time for the RNLI as we continually develop the Inshore Lifeboat Centre (ILC) in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, and our All-weather Lifeboat Centre (ALC) production and maintenance facility in Poole. The Inshore Lifeboat Centre manufactures and maintains the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) fleet to the highest standards to survive the harshest of sea conditions.
The opportunity
This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated individuals to undertake a four year apprenticeship with the Inshore Lifeboat Centre (ILC) within boat building. During your programme you will attend college on a day release basis with the rest of your week spent putting your learning into practice in the workplace such as:
- Assembly, installation, modification, repair/maintenance of marine assets & equipment
- Work with composite materials
- Preparation & application of primary, secondary and final paint finishes
- Introduction to fabrication processes
You will ideally hold at least three GCSEs (grade 4 or above, or equivalent) including Maths, English, and Science, but this is not essential.
Apprentice – Boat Builder
During your apprenticeship you will gain job specific skills, understanding engineering drawings, lofting to build plug and moulds, understanding of composite materials, assembling, installation, repairing, modifying, maintaining.
You will be required to attend Isle of Wight College as part of your apprenticeship.
