About us

Our purpose is simple: to save lives at sea. 24 hours a day, every day, RNLI lifesavers are ready to launch to the rescue.

An opportunity has arisen to join the RNLI as a Lifeguard Assessor Trainer, a key role in ensuring the effective delivery of the RNLI Lifeguard Service.

Some of the benefits

  • Salary £37,722 - £44,378 (dependent on experience)
  • 26 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays
  • Outstanding pension scheme
  • Life assurance
  • Health and dental cash plan

Your role

The role involves the delivery of training, assessment and verification of lifeguard competencies throughout the lifeguarding season. Working collaboratively with other Lifeguard Assessor Trainers and colleagues across the organisation, you will help drive training quality and safety standards. This will include contributing to national working groups and acting as a subject matter expert in all areas of lifeguard training.

Using your leadership skills, you will inspire and develop lifeguards at all levels. You will have experience leading group-based training and the ability to develop, implement and work to structured training plans. Supported by your peer Lifeguard Assessor Trainers, you will ensure that Local Trainer Assessors are verified to the highest possible standard and that consistent, standardised training and assessment practices are embedded across the service.

You will be required to make effective, appropriate and compliant regional interventions to ensure the service operates safely. The role will also involve the development and delivery of high-quality training courses both regionally and nationally, working closely with Lifeguard Supervisors and Regional Lifeguard Leads.

About you

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of lifeguard procedures and operations.

You will have a clear passion for training and be a competent trainer. You will need to be confident presenting to both small groups and large audiences, with the ability to adapt your delivery style to suit different learners.

An externally recognised training, teaching, assessing or verifying qualification would be advantageous. Experience in programme development, and the production of training materials is also desirable.

Additional information

This is a home-based role requiring extensive travel throughout the UK and Ireland. You will work remotely across multiple teams and often under your own initiative. While maintaining your own professional competence, you will also develop a range of new qualifications to support your role.

You must hold a current ILS Lifeguard Qualification and a full driving licence. Strong time management skills, attention to detail and an innovative approach to continuous improvement are essential.

Due to the nature of the role, you must be comfortable with frequent travel, lone working and independent problem-solving. A commercial vehicle will be provided, and due to current service requirements, candidates must reside in the South of England with a focus on the South East Region.

This is a challenging but rewarding role. If you have strong people management skills, a keen eye for detail, and are passionate about improving training, assessment and resources that directly support the RNLI Lifeguard Service, we would welcome your application.

Diversity and inclusion

The RNLI is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and particularly encourage applications from women and those currently underrepresented within the Lifeguard Assessor Trainer team. We believe that a diverse range of perspectives strengthens our training, leadership and decision-making, helping us to continually improve the service we provide.

This post requires a valid driving licence.

Diversity at the RNLI

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save Every One.
